A case of Hb-SC disease presenting as priapism.

چکیده
Priapism is a common symptom in Haemoglobin SC and SS disease, which results from thrombosis in the vascular spaces in the cavernous tissue of penis. Thrombosis is due to altered physico-chemical properties of HbS which has glutamic acid substituted for valine in the sixth position from N-terminal in Beta Chain. When deoxygenated, HbS is less soluble and tactoids form in red cells which cause distortion and damage to the red cell membrane. Sickled red cells become rigid and mechanically fragile resulting in haemolysis, repeated vascular occlusions and infarction of various interbak organs like kidneys, mesentery, intestine, lungs, brain and bones.

Acute Sickle Hepatic Crisis after Liver Transplantation in a Patient with Hb SC Disease
Acute sickle hepatic crisis (ASHC) has been observed in approximately 10% of patients with sickle cell disease. It occurs predominantly in patients with homozygous (Hb SS) sickle cell anemia and to a lesser degree in patients with Hb SC disease, sickle cell trait, and Hb S beta thalassemia. Patients commonly present with jaundice, right upper quadrant pain, nausea, low-grade fever, tender hepat...

e read with great interest the recent review presented by de ouza Pacheco and Goncalves,1 and we would like to briefly eport our experience with Klotho (KL) single nucleotide polyorphisms (SNPs) and sickle cell disease (SCD). SCD presents a phenotypic heterogeneity that has not een fully elucidated yet. Genetic modifiers and environmenal effects may account for the different clinical outcomes b...
متن کاملHematological parameters in sickle cell anemia patients with and without priapism.
BACKGROUND Priapism was associated with certain hematological parameters in sickle cell anemia (SCA) patients in one report but not in another. We studied differences in haematological parameters between SCA patients with and without priapism. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eighteen patients with SCA who presented with acute priapism during the years 2001-2004 were compared with age- and sex-matched SC...
متن کاملAn uncommon association with sub-arachnoid hemorrhage in a young man
Priapism is a relatively uncommon condition, with an incidence rate of 1.5 per 100,000 person-years amongst the general population.1 Hence, most healthcare professionals are unfamiliar with this condition. Key to the evaluation of priapism is to define whether it is ischemic or non-ischemic in nature. Non-ischemic priapism is commonly due to trauma, such as genitourinary injury, leading to unco...

Thorough clinical examination and investigative work-up revealed Hb E trait with Gaucher’s disease. To the best of o...
